Imagine a world without body odor. Some recent discoveries by scientists in this surprisingly under-researched area may help us get there. Armpit secretions begin their life odorless. It takes bacteria to give them their pungent tang. Two types of chemicals are mainly responsible. One is the fatty acid, butyric acid. You may not have heard of butyric acid but you’ve probably smelled it.

How many times have you heard that? Hopefully a lot. Most of the time, someone is commenting on your perfume or cologne or the fact that you failed to properly rinse the Herbal Essence from your hair. But it turns out that you have your own personal scent which comes from somewhere deep down inside that others either love or, you know, ask you to shower.
And it turns out that this scent has a powerful effect on how others perceive and are attracted to you. Called pheromones, this scent is a primal marker that seems to drive attraction between the sexes based on subtle cues that alert you to a quality genetic match. Hot, right? That seems to be sufficient to set your scent. You then take the aforementioned T-shirt and put in a plastic Ziploc bag and pop it in the freezer until the night of the party. Each bag is then coded for anonymity and guests are asked to throw dignity to the wind and sniff out a match.
Matches then have their picture taken with the non-offending bag and it is shown on a big screen for all to see. According to pheromone party organizers, at a recent party in New York with 40 singles, the night ended with a half-dozen hookups and one relationship. Fairly good results. Then again, a control group of 40 single New Yorkers at a non-olfactory party resulted in 12 hookups, two relationships and three restraining orders.
A Better Way To Speed Date?
But they’re also synthesized and marketed to consumers as potions to increase sexual attractiveness. They’ve been sold for years, but new studies and claims are making these items hotter than ever. Paris Hilton knows. She added them to her latest perfume. But the debate remains: Do pheromones really work or is this just all hype?
A truly interesting perfume teaches you the invisible textures of the world, forces you to think in multitudes. There are corporate bylaws regarding perfume, so ingrained it has become in our approach to professionalism. Perfumery is a prejudice that provides you a modicum of control. I mean, duh. When I came across smell. Given that I have a spectacularly depressing success rate of matches vs actual communication on Tinder, I figured nothing could really be worse than what is already uneventful.
Pheromones are substances which are secreted to the outside by an individual and received by a second individual of the same species. Many examples exist in animals but their role in humans remains uncertain since adults have no functioning vomeronasal organ, which processes pheromone signals in animals.
Yet pheromones can be detected by the olfactory system although humans under develop and underrate their smelling sense. Pheromones may be present in all bodily secretions but most attention has been geared toward axillary sweat which contains the odorous androstenes.

The first mail odor dating service. How it works. We send you a t-shirt; You wear the shirt for three days and three nights without deodorant.
As a single woman who is willing to try anything — well, almost anything — to meet my special someone, I was intrigued by Smell Dating when I wrote about it back in February. No deodorant, no perfume, just your natural sometimes sweaty smell. Then you mail the at this point, smelly t-shirt back and in return you get samples of t-shirts worn by other people who have done the same thing.
The rest — a date, marriage, lifelong love — is up to you. However, after I found out that Smell Dating was only open to people at a time in New York City, the exclusivity and urgency drew me in. Plus, it would probably make a pretty good story, right?
